ABOUT HEY SHORTY!
Hey Shorty! It’s your voice, your vision, and your choice!
WHAT IS HEY SHORTY?
Hey Shorty is a Riverside-based nonprofit media and mentoring organization focused on introducing and educating young girls and gender-expansive youths aged 12-18 on the foundations of film production while providing academic tutoring, college counseling, and career planning. Hey Shorty encourages youths to become leaders in their field and helps them build the confidence to make informed choices and pursue excellence in all dimensions of their lives.
WHY DO WE DO IT?
Many girls face immense challenges in their daily lives including abuse, neglect, depression, anxiety, and much more. Depression and anxiety occur more often in girls today than in the past. One out of four girls, (that’s nearly 2.4 million girls!) reports suffering from major depressive symptoms. Between 2016 and 2020, girls were on average 48 percent more likely to have a depression diagnosis and 43 percent more likely to have an anxiety diagnosis than their male peers. Hey Shorty hopes to aid girls through these challenges to create a positive lasting impact in their lives.
Our teens attend over-impacted schools where these issues are not given the attention they deserve. The county of Riverside has a counselor-to-student ratio of 597:1 and a teacher-to-student ratio of 23:5. Girls aren't getting the individual help they need.
Our solution for this issue is to develop a supportive community and provide girls with a compassionate mentor to create a safe environment. Our mentors offer a safe zone where girls can feel known, seen, understood, and valued for exactly who she is and turn to someone when in need. We believe that a supportive mentor can change a girl’s life!
WHAT DOES HEY SHORTY OFFER?
Hey Shorty’s mission is to give girls the tools to incite change through all media platforms by sharing their voices in a safe environment. We hope to introduce the building blocks of filmmaking while providing a hands-on filmmaking experience. We specialize in analog and digital filmmaking. Hey Shorty offers one-on-one mentoring and monthly filmmaking workshops. Hey Shorty teaches participants techniques to produce group and individual short films. Workshops and mentoring sessions explore screenwriting, production techniques, editing, graphic design, and more.
Hey Shorty also offers college prep workshops, career planning, and tutoring services to girls in need.
WHAT IS HEY SHORTY’S GOAL?
Our goal is to instill confidence in participants to create change through art, emerge as leaders in the film industry, and create a lifelong community.
